Learn about CHENILLE to help with your selection process.
✓ WHAT IS CHENILLE
Chenille is a fuzzy, caterpillar-like yarn, produced by locking short, cut fibers at right angles to the core thread. It creates a pile surface much like a velvet, but not quite as dense.
✓ CLEANABILITY
Chenille is a high-maintenance fabric when it comes to cleaning and spot cleaning. Pile fibers can dislodge with mild agitation.
Chenille fabrics with a high percentage of rayon can distort dramatically when water-based substances come in contact with them.
White and off-white chenille fabrics will often display varying shades of color from bleached white to yellow on the same piece.
Water-based cleaners will often distort the nap leaving a bleached appearance.
Chenille fabrics should be dry-cleaned only.
Damp dusting should also be done regularly using dry cleaning chemicals.
Cushions should be rotated and vacuumed regularly.
Vacuuming should be done carefully, so as not to over-agitate the fibers.
Water spills need to be wicked up carefully so pressure does not distort the fibers.
✓ RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING CHENILLE:
The fiber type used in the construction of chenille is the most important factor in determining how the fibers will react to cleaning.
Testing is always important.
Always consult a professional.
Reducing absorbency with a product like Fiber-Seal combined with spot cleaning services will help with maintenance.
