Check in with us when you are selecting fabrics and carpeting for help with cleanability, as we provide maintenance to thousands of clients. Learn about ALPACA  to help with your selection process.

✓  WHAT IS ALPACA

  • Alpaca is the hair fiber from the animal of the same name. Alpacas are "camelids" meaning they are a cousin to the camel. The alpaca is about half the size of a llama and they are native to the Andes Mountains of Chile, Peru, and Bolivia.

  • Alpaca is a protein fiber, like all other fibers of animal origin. It is easily dyed and resilient.

✓ CLEANABILITY

  • When Alpaca is blended with other fibers, each of the fibers must be considered when choosing the appropriate cleaning method.

  • Assuming careful testing, most alpaca fabrics are likely to be wet-cleanable with normal methods and chemicals.

  • Alpaca fabric can be spot-cleaned (again, assuming pre-testing) using both water-based cleaners and dry-cleaning solvents.

  • Chemicals containing optical brighteners should be avoided as they can leave white spots on alpaca.

✓ RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING ALPACA:

With proper care, alpaca fabrics can last for years.

  • Testing is always important.

  • Always consult a professional.

  • Reducing absorbency with a product like Fiber-Seal combined with spot cleaning services will help with maintenance.

  • For more comprehensive information - see our TEXTILE TIP (Print and keep for reference).
