Learn about SISAL to help with your selection process.
✓ WHAT IS SISAL?
Sisal is a fiber that is obtained from the leaves of plants belonging to the agave family. The processing of the fiber begins with the separation of the fleshy part of the leaf. Sisal is used in floor coverings.
✓ CLEANABILITY
It is important to understand the type of soil involved before embarking on a cleaning method. One of the best measures of cleaning is to vacuum regularly to remove dry soil and dust.
Water-based spills such as coffee and colas or dog stains can present a problem as they must be cleaned with water which can brown a sisal rug or cause lighter spots.
Before cleaning, pre-testing must always be performed to check for potential problems; calling a professional for help is important.
✓ TYPES OF SISAL
Painted sisal - sisal floor coverings can be painted by hand or screen printed. Most paint is durable but traffic over time can wear the design. Cleaning can also weaken the paint.
Blends - we see sisal blended with other fibers such as wool. This can dramatically change the look and the texture.
RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN SELECTING SISAL:
Sisal is very absorbent - put with proper protection and maintenance it can perform well.
We don't recommend installing sisal in an area that is prone to spills and pet accidents as they can be challenging to spot clean.
